13 June 2015 – Trip: Kingsbridge for picnic lunch, and then Overbecks (NT)

Synopsis: Trip with Mum to Kingsbridge for a picnic lunch on a bench facing the Kingsbridge Estuary. And then on to Overbecks (NT) to explore the garden, and briefly visit the house.

This was a little outing Mum and I took down to the South Hams. A Tesco supplied picnic was acquired as we set out for Kingsbridge. We found a nice bench with a view overlooking the Kingsbridge Estuary not far from the centre of Kingsbridge. It wasn’t long before I had the kettle on and we were tucking into a very nice lunch. A group of young people passed us, and one lad asked us if we were camping there, or just having a picnic.

After lunch we set off for Overbecks (NT), only a short hop from Kingsbridge. We’ve visited Overbecks on a number of occasions, but their gardens are simply lovely, one of the best in Devon, and, as with all gardens, depending on the season, there are always different things to see.

I forgot to pack my camera, so I had to make do with my smartphone. Although not bad, it isn’t a match for my digital SLR, so apologies for that. In fact the only photos I took are those for which there are thumbnails in the the heading of this post. I decided, however, to do something different this time, and instead of photos, I’ve shot some video of the garden. I hope you might take pleasure in at least some of the little video snapshots I recorded, which are to be found from the Fickr ‘Video’ link above.

We were lucky enough to get a hearing of the Overbeck’s Polyphon whilst we were there. They only play the Polyphon at certain times, so as to reduce the wear on the machine, as once it’s gone, its gone. They are fortunate in that they have someone skilled in producing the disks that the machine plays. We were treated to a rendition of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Mikado, and quite lovely it was too.

Description and photos of previous visits of ours to Overbeck’s can be found from the following links:
