Introduction
- I'm a keen walker, and I like taking photographs, plenty of evidence for both can be found from my internet presence. I cycle regularly, for enjoyment, as a practical means of transport, and as a way of staying fit. I also swim and play badminton. I enjoy reading and listening to music. I can easily be contacted via my Contact Form or @UKRobertSlack [Twitter] and am happy to take enquiries on any subject. Twitter Direct Message button included here:-

- Without doubt it is my two daughters, Helen and Laura, who are so very important to me. They're an absolute joy. We've had many a great holiday together, some of which are captured in holiday photos on my Flickr account, along with the accounts of Helen and Laura. My daughters seem to enjoy doing the things I like doing, and for that I must count myself very lucky. And, recent additions, I now have two delightful grandsons, Benjamin (Feb 2017) and Niclas (Oct 2018). And two charming 'adoptive' grandchildren, Liam and (Little) Helen. My daughters and their families live in Germany, the southern state of Baden-Württemberg [Google Maps], and this explains the numerous blog posts from that part of the world.

- My mother is Jean Maureen Slack (née Rockett) b.1934. My father, Frederick John Slack ('Jack Slack'), 1921-2002. I have two brothers, Michael and David, and one sister, Wendy. I am the eldest. All of us live in our home city of Exeter, Devon. The next generation of our family are all ladies (or so they like to think), 8 of them in total, of which I lay claim to 2. And the generation to follow them are growing in number, seemingly by the day. I lack the energy to be the father/grandfather I should be, but I do try my best, and it can be a lot of fun. I'm growing older.

- As a self-confessed Devon topophile, it is the combination of my outdoor pursuits and my interest in photography that is my main reason for having a presence on the Internet. I wanted to record my walks and the photos I take on them. In doing so, my blog journal and photo sets are primarily a personal diary in a public space. That is to say if anyone should find things of interest in what I place online, I am pleased that should be so, but my objective all along has been merely to log the ramblings of a Devonshire lad. Please check out my blog, as found here, if you wish to know a little more about my leisure activities.

- I am being a little enigmatic about my age, providing here twelve not so consequential events that occurred in the year in which I was born, from which you just might deduce my age.

- In case you're wondering about my cover photo above. Well, I was in a corner, but plumped for this photo as background, inlaid with this picture of me. This I've made my thematic cover across Blogger, Flickr, Twitter and YouTube.

- Canon EOS 550D acquired January 2012 and since that time has become my main camera. Canon Powershot S60 has become my convenience camera, as it's so compact, light and easy to carry.

- The majority of photos on Flickr from June 2008 are geo-tagged from my handheld GPS (Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx) acquired at this date. The geographic location of each photo is presented below the date/time information in the right-hand column of each photo.

Tracing Your Ancestors Using DNA: A Guide for Family Historians
really liked it
The fact that this is the first book I've read on this subject makes it a difficult book for me to review as I have no comparisons. The two major thoughts on the book I was left with were: (1) this is a subject that is considerably more ...
Once There Were Wolves
it was amazing
The central characters here, as in Migrations, carry a barely submerged emotional charge that drives their actions forward. The central character, Inti, is subtle and nuanced at one level, at another, a harsh force to be reckoned with. T...

A surprising novel for which I wasn't exactly prepared. A psychedelic novel, now who would have expected that of Daphne du Maurier? Published in 1969, the penultimate novel the author would pen, should perhaps have been a clue to its nat...
Station Eleven
really liked it
The storyline, an apocalyptic pandemic, though topical wasn't immediately appealing, but reviews of this book were positive and I was in the mood for sampling an author new to me. The novel, written well before the Covid-19 pandemic, did...

08 - Family History
Active on family history web sites
- I am in the process of mapping our family history. This is proving a long process, one that I've been engaged in for a number of years. The history of our family that I have so far pieced together has proven fascinating, and there's so much more to be done. I watched an early series of the TV programme, Who Do You Think You Are?, and realised, as perhaps many have, I didn't really have a good answer to that question. I've learnt a lot since those early days, and one thing I soon realised was that making contact with others and sharing family history information is a good way of expanding what is known about a family. I hold our family tree on both Genes Reunited and Ancestry. On Genes Reunited I appear as 'Robert (Twitter-UKRobertSlack) Slack' and on Ancestry I appear as 'Robert Slack Exeter (@UKRobertSlack)'. I do not hold documentary records on either Genes Reunited or Ancestry. I hold these supporting research documents (BMD, Census, etc.) in online cloud storage, evidence for which I can provide on request. I welcome any contact with enquiries regarding possible family links, which I'm more than happy to answer. I can easily be contacted via my Contact Form or @UKRobertSlack [Twitter]. Please do not hesitate to drop me a line. Twitter Direct Message button included here:-

Ancestry DNA
- On Monday 22/07/2019 I received the results of my Ancestry DNA analysis. Below, you will see my ethnicity chart arising from this analysis (please note this is my original ethnicity chart from Ancestry; later versions of this chart can be viewed from the following link: 'Ancestry DNA - My Ethnicity Stats' - [Flickr search]. The 'Ireland and Scotland' quota shown here is almost certainly arising from my father's maternal grandfather (name 'Clapperton') who was Scottish. The ethnicity proportion is however quite surprisingly high. I'm not sure what that says about me. Am I very much my father's son? The small 'Germanic' quota, perhaps a surprise, I think may be arising from the fact that I believe we have French blood (probably from the time of the Huguenots arriving in the UK) on my mother's side of the family (names: 'Rockett' and 'Raison'). I have provided a link to my profile on Ancestry below.
