Synopsis: A very short afternoon stroll on the outskirts of Seaton and then on to Beer. A landslip on the Old Beer Road in Seaton curtailed my intended walk.
This was a rather short walk cut even shorter. I’d seen on the news that part of Old Beer Road at Seaton had been damaged by recent heavy rains and thought I could walk that way to see for myself. I had expected the road to be closed to traffic, but had assumed the way was still open to people on foot – wrong! I came upon a tall steel mesh fence that spanned the entire road including the pathway with a notice saying path closed. The landslip is quite substantial and it is now said that Seaton’s Old Beer Road ‘unlikely to open to traffic’ in this BBC news item.
I’d parked my car back on the hill at the top of Stovar Long Lane and walked down to the Old Beer Road but since my progress was blocked I opted to pick up the coastal path in the opposite direction to Beer. This short section of coast path offers glorious views in both direction. Firstly I looked out across Seaton Bay and of course Seaton itself. I could see now the section of cliff at which the landslip had occurred closing the Old Beer Road. A short distance further and I was dropping into Beer and was greeted with a fine view of the beach and white cliffs leading out to Beer Head.
I satisfied myself with a short walk along the beach and then up through the main street of the town. This was followed by a stiff climb up Church Hill to pick up a footpath which took me higher still, finally depositing me back in Stovar Long Lane.
So, just a very short afternoon stroll but one with some very nice views all the same.
